I love Football and especially the big events and there is none bigger than the World Cup. Here is a quick review of some of the kits on offer for this summers Fifa World Cup which kicked off on Thursday the 12th June in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With 32 teams competing and both having a home and away kit that’s a lot of football jerseys. This time around there have been some very strong guidelines, with Fifa dictating to the national football associations that they must have two very different and contrasting kits. Also for HD broadcasting purpose they have urged teams to wear monotone kits (matching Top and shorts) which has meant that many teams have had to change their traditional kits or colours, which I guess limits creativity a little. Many kit suppliers have opted to look to the past to inspire their designs which has resulted in some great clean and modern yet retro feel kits this year.
Being English I could hardly leave out the England national football kit. This is another modern-retro design by Nike with the prominent 3 lions badge on the chest and a small silver star above this, representing the team’s single World Cup win in 1966. It also has a bespoke font for the all lettering and numbers designed by legendary graphic designer Neville Brody. Brody is best known for his work as the Art Director for The Face magazine in the 1980’s and for his later work in the 1990’s for Arena magazine. Brody said in a statement that, “The core inspiration was to focus on the intersection between flair and workmanlike reliability,” which reflects the combination of, “style and no-frills efficiency” of the English squad.
